Description

The SuccessMaker Speed Games iPad app is designed for students in grades 1-6 to practice the basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These exercises build automaticity, allowing students to practice recalling math facts in a fast-paced setting. There are a total of 48 Speed Game levels, which equates to 12 for each operation.
The app is local to the device so it does not require an internet connection. It is designed as a pass and play game for players to play against each other by comparing their high scores.

Player Names
Add players to the list by selecting the New Player button. Enter the player nickname and hit the Done button. Players can also be deleted from the list by selecting the Edit button and hitting the red delete icon next to the name to delete.

Player Avatars
Six of the SuccessMaker math characters are available for players to select avatars. Players can select a new avatar from the home page by selecting their name from the list and then selecting the Change Avatar button. To complete the process, players can tap the Done button, or simply tap on the picture of the avatar itself to close the “customize avatar” window.

Game Logic
First select a math operation then select a level to begin. At the beginning of the game, only level 1 for each operation is available. The other levels must be unlocked through achievement in terms of math fact accuracy and speed.
Rewards
Players earn a blue ribbon each time they correctly answer five facts in a row. The highest number of ribbons collected for a level displays beneath the level icon on the “Choose a Level” screen.

Game Mechanics
Plays must earn four or more blue ribbons to unlock the next Speed Game level for that operation. If not, they will be prompted to try the level again or select a different operation.

Scoring:
The points received for each correct answer depends on the speed of response. Students earn 25 points for each correct answer. The scoring logic matches how Speed Games functions in SuccessMaker. It is the following:

Points Earned Time Interval
25 3 seconds or less
20 Between 3 and 4 seconds
15 Between 4 and 5 seconds
10 Between 5 and 6 seconds
5 Between 6 and 7 seconds
0 No response after 8 seconds

Scoreboard
A scoreboard displays players’ cumulative scores. The high score from each level is combined for a player’s total score. Players can play unlocked levels again and again to try to beat previous scores. The difference between a new high score and the previous high score for each level will be add to a player’s high score total on the scoreboard.
